Description of Doll for Sale

This is a beautiful example of an antique Simon Halbig 1009 bisque head fashion doll.  The doll is 10 1/2 inches tall and was made in Germany from 1889 to the very early 1890's.  She has a swivel bisque head and shoulder-plate with bisque hands.  The head has applied ears that are pierced.  There are no earrings with her.  This doll is Simon & Halbig's attempt to emulating the popular French fashion dolls made by Jumeau and others in this time period.  The doll has the original working sleep eyes with dark almost pupil-less eyes.  The doll has cloth feet with the original knit stockings and the tiniest leather shoes with metal florets.  She came to me with her original antique mohair wig without a pate.  I will be adding a new one when I ship her out.

All of the antique clothes are factory original.  The silk fabric of the dress has some deterioration and wear on the bodice and along creases.  Considering it is 120+ year old silk it is in amazing condition.  It has been my observation that silk from this era seems to survive better, probably because it was made using more natural dyes.  Antique silk dresses made closer to the start of the 20th century, when harsher synthetic dyes were more common, tend to deteriorate more.  The fabric in this dress is still soft and subtle and is not shattering or flaking.  She has an original antique glass bead necklace.

Head Mark

S&H 1009

DEP

Marks

The head has a typical Simon & Halbig mark as shown. The head is not marked Germany which likely dates it to 1889 to very early 1890's.  In 1891 the US required country of origin be marked on imports and most doll manufacturers (including Simon & Halbig) started adding Germany to heads to comply with the law.  The head does have the DEP mark required for exports to France so it is assumed it would have also have had Germany added if the US requirement was in effect when the head was made.

Condition of Doll for Sale

damage1

The bisque head is perfect with no cracks or repairs. There is a chip on one earring hole.  (see pictures) You can click the pictures to see close-ups of the condition. The face paint is good with a minor nose rub.  There are also stress cracks from the firing behind both ears.  The bisque hands are in good shape with no rubs, chips or repairs.  The head is loosely strung but can be posed appropriately.  Because of the design of the shoulder head it is not practical to tighten up the stringing of the head.

damage2 damage3

The dress has some deterioration of the fabric especially on the bodice and the antique metal work on the bodice has darkened but is not corroded. One of the hooks on the cummerbund may be missing.  There is chain there but no hook to secure it.  The clothes are sewn on so I could not examine the torso and upper arms of the body. Based on an external examination and from checking under the skirt I can state that doll has her original cloth body with no rips, repairs or foxing.  There is some staining especially to the socks.

This is an antique doll that will have some wear and imperfections expected in an antique or vintage doll.  I make every effort to describe all significant flaws in my descriptions and show them in the pictures.  Please read the description fully and examine all the pictures to be sure you understand the condition of the doll.  The pictures can be enlarged to show the doll in great detail.  If you have any questions or would like any additional information on this doll please email me and I will be glad to answer your question.  California residents are responsible for California Sales tax in addition to the purchase price shown.
